With 38 races tentatively on the schedule for five-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Champion Philip Morris in 2019, it appears a sixth title could be around the corner.
Morris won his fifth NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National title last season on the heels of a full-time schedule at South Boston Speedway and running select races at Langley Speedway and Dominion Raceway. With one-off starts at Southern National Motorsports Park, Myrtle Beach Speedway and Hickory Motor Speedway.
With 35 starts in 2018, Morris won 23 times with victories all over the region and only finished outside the top ten in four of those starts while driving a car from the stables of Reynolds Racing Chassis with Forrest Reynolds serving as crew chief. Morris captured the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National championship by 47 points over Midwest driver Steve Carlson and 49 over Northeast modified driver Keith Rocco.
Morris also picked up the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Virginia State championship but despite his full-time run at South Boston last season, Morris did not win the track championship. He finished 56 points behind champion Peyton Sellers in second. Morris won seven races to Sellers three wins but Sellers scored 139 passing points to Morris’ 67. Without passing points, Morris would have won the championship by 16 points. Morris will return to South Boston for a full slate of racing this season.
Morris will compete on 25 dates during the course of the season including completing his season at Martinsville Speedway with the ValleyStar 300. 12 of those dates will take place at South Boston with eight of them at Langley Speedway, where Morris won seven races in select starts on the 4/10 mile flat track. Morris will compete in Langley Speedway’s two marquee events, the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown and the Hampton Heat.
Morris will compete on two dates each at Dominion Raceway and Motor Mile Speedway. Morris won four races at Dominion during 2018 but will return to Motor Mile for the first time since dominating the 2017 season. Motor Mile was closed during the 2018 season.
Morris’ schedule looks similar to last years National title run. A sixth NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National championship would put Morris in a class of his own as the only six-time National title winner. Currently, he’s tied with the legendary Larry Phillips, who both have five.
With Morris’ schedule, we’ll be on National title watch from the drop of the first green flag at South Boston all the way to his final starts in twins at Langley Speedway on September 14th.
