Timmonsville, SC(August 11, 2011) — It’s not often that you find two cars sitting in Victory Lane after a 50-lap race, but that’s what we had on Saturday night at the Florence Motor Speedway.
Two guys sitting in victory lane after a last lap incident in turn three. The guys involved? Ryan Hall and Austin Leitner, a rookie, who had never been to victory lane in his young career.
Leitner dominated the evening starting from the pole after he claimed the top spot by over a tenth of a second on the field in qualifying. Bobby June would start along side. The first 46-laps would be run green flag, which was a nice change after the demolition derby that was put on last week that saw Jarrett Smith end up on top of the backstretch wall.
The first and only caution of the night was for Averitt Lucas who went around in turn one and two when he tried to pass June and a lapped car at the same time entering the corner. June would come to a stop as Lucas stopped right in front of him, sending both drivers to the rear of the field.
This is were the good stuff begins. Leitner and Hall would start on the front row for the double-file restart with Leitner going to the high side. The two would then make contact down the backstretch as Hall almost went off track.
Hall would give Leitner a shot entering turn three, but it wasn’t done there. The next time down the backstretch, Hall once again was having to fight to stay on the race track. Again, another tap enter the corner was issued.
Coming to the white flag, the two are side by side. Hall wasn’t having any of Leitner’s moves. Leitner drove into turn three with the lead, but he wouldn’t exit the corner with it as he went around in the middle of three and four.
Hall would cross under the flag to pick up his first win of the season, but the drama had just begun.
Leitner would come around to the frontstretch where Hall was already parked and began to celebrate as if he had won the race. He climbed from his car stood on top as the cheers from the stands bellowed down.
Hall would exit his car as the boos poured down, he might not be a fan favorite after that, but several drivers could be heard telling Hall they were glad the incident in turn three happened as Leinter had drove them the same way in previous weeks.
Words between Leitner’s crew and Hall’s crew insued with a few “If you wanna play like that, we can play like that’ comments from both sides.
Some clarification from the track on the rule about the last lap was simply put, “On the last lap, the race is on, it doesn’t matter what happens, the first car to the checkered flag is the winner.”
Coming home second would be Clay Thomas. Holly Jackson who dropped a rim on here foot the week before came home third for the second time in two weeks. Points leader Ronnie Daniels was fourth, with William Haynie fifth.
