Myrtle Beach Speedway will open the 2016 racing season for short track fans in the Carolinas on February 26th and 27th with a $5,000-to-win Late Model Stock Car race called the Icebreaker.  That announcement came with the official release of their 2016 season schedule.

“February 26th – 27th will showcase the NASCAR Late Model Stock and Mini Stock divisions as they will compete in the debut of the Icebreaker 200,” Myrtle Beach Speedway general manger Steve Zacharias said in an email released by Myrtle Beach Speedway.  “Late Models will race 125 laps on one set of tires while Mini Stocks will go 50 laps. Entry forms for this race will be available online or at the speedway office in the coming days.”

The Icebreaker 200 is worth more than just $5,000 for Late Model Stock Car drivers, it is also one of four opportunities for competitors to clinch a spot for the 2016 running of the UNOH Battle at the Beach.  Twin races on July 1st and a race October 15th will also provide opportunities for drivers to lock themselves in the November classic.

“Throughout the season, Late Model Stock drivers will have 4 opportunities to lock in to the UNOH Battle at the Beach feature in November,” Zacharias commented.

The most important change for Myrtle Beach Speedway is that the track will now operate out of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series rulebook instead of running a hybrid Limited Late Model package that has been used in past years at the track.

“New for 2016, the speedway’s feature division, Late Model Stocks, will run by the 2016 NASCAR rule book instead of the limited package of years past,” Zacharias’ statement read.  “The points season at MBS will consist of 11 weekends equaling 18 races for Late Models with twin events on select weekends. Other divisions for the 2016 season include Chargers, Mini Stocks, Super Trucks, Vintage Cars, and the debut of an entertaining Skid Plate division.”
