Victories by Sam Yarbrough and Trey Gibson over the weekend will tighten up the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) South Carolina State Championship race.
As of last week’s points update, Gibson, who now has eight wins on the year, trails David Roberts, who only has three wins while Sam Yarbrough, who now has six wins, sits in third. Roberts and Gibson have been racing at both Greenville-Pickens Speedway and Anderson Motor Speedway, while Yarbrough has been competing at Myrtle Beach Speedway.
Sam Yarbrough’s victory on Saturday night helped him add to what is now a 54 point lead over Tyler English in the Myrtle Beach Speedway track championship standings. At Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Roberts holds a commanding 62 point advantage over Gibson. Meanwhile, at Anderson Motor Speedway, Trey Gibson holds a 15 point lead over RA Brown.
All three drivers that now find themselves in the hunt for the state championship appear destined to come away, at least, with track championships of their own between the three NASCAR sanctioned tracks in South Carolina.
Right now, the disadvantage for Yarbrough appears to be the number of races he has competed in – nine, versus the 24 races Roberts has raced in and the 22 races Gibson has been a part of. While NASCAR only takes the 18 best finishes of the season, Myrtle Beach Speedway’s schedule only consists of seven more feature races for the Late Model Stock Car division. So, if Yarbrough decides to race for the state championship, he will have to travel.
Storm Altman, Sr. currently sits atop the standings at the non-sanctioned Florence Motor Speedway with a 41 point advantage over Archie Adams, Jr, according to the track website’s most recent points update. The two drivers have dominated the season thus far, with Averitt Lucas also scoring victories. Saturday night’s races were called off due to rain with their next race being held on July 4th.
Dillon Motor Speedway, which is located near the famous “South of the Border” tourist attraction, returns to action on Saturday night, June 27th. The last race saw BJ Mackey put an end to a three race winning streak by Bobby Gower. Andrew Thomas is the only other driver to win a race this season, having won the season opening race on March 21st.
