HICKORY, NC :: Dylon Wilson, who won races at Hickory Motor Speedway and Wake County Speedway in 2014, will be competing in the Snowflake 100 at Five Flags Speedway in December.
The Snowflake 100 serves as the prelude to the Snowball Derby which is Super Late Model racing’s most prestigious event. Wilson, 18, raced in Limited Late Models at Hickory Motor Speedway as well as Late Models at Wake County Speedway. He won races at both tracks. Now, he’s looking to start his career in the Straight Rail racecars with a new team, Jeremy Britton and BMC Motorsports Development, and he hopes to do so with a strong run in the Snowflake 100.
“I met Jeremy through my dad,” Wilson said. “My dad raced dirt for a little while. They decided they wanted to do some asphalt. They came to some of my Hickory races. They’re from Alabama so the Snowball Derby is the biggest race for them. They decided to buy a car which is an older car. It’s a 2012 model. They got that built up and sent it to my race shop three weeks ago. Me and dad’s been getting it ready ever since then and we just about have it finished up so we’re going down there to get our feet wet in it.”
Wilson’s set modest expectations for himself knowing he will face some of the toughest competition in Super Late Model racing just to make the field for the Snowflake 100.
“I’ve never driven a Super Late Model, we’ve never worked on it,” Wilson stated. “It’s tough; it will be a blessing to even make the show. We’re going down there to get our feet wet. We’ve got a good enough team that I’m confident. There are 70 pre-entries so there are many who won’t make it. They start like 36 or so.”
Wilson knows it would be a victory to make the race, not just for himself but for the BMC Motorsports Development racing team.
“We’ll go down there and try to make a name for ourselves not just for me but for the team. They’re working on a development team so they’ve got a few cars to rent in Late Models and Limited Late Models. My car that I ran at Hickory and Wake County, that’s available to rent. We’re merging together, trying to be competitive with other teams that race in the Southeast.”
Wilson plans to run more in 2015. The CARS Tour gives him and the BMC Team an opportunity to run in both a Late Model Stock Car and a Super Late Model. He also has the opportunity to compete in the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Model touring series as well.
“We’re going to stick with them and run SLM and LMSC. With the CARS Tour, we can run both as much as we can. Hopefully, we’ll run some PASS Series and maybe some ARCA/CRA. We’re trying to go to all these big races such as Winchester and the Snowball Derby. I’ll also be focusing on helping them with rental programs, with my knowledge at Hickory and Wake County, to get kids like me that are younger and less experienced to get the ball rolling and help them as much as I can.”
