MOBILE, AL . :: The Southern Super Series is set to conclude its second season over the weekend with a pair of races on Friday night and Saturday night at Pensacola Five Flags Speedway and Mobile International Speedway respectively.

Just one year removed from the inaugural season in which Daniel Hemric out-dueled Bubba Pollard by a single point for the championship, the two are once again at it for the 2014 crown. Pollard leads Hemric by only eight markers this time around with two events and a maximum of 230 points on the table.

The second season picked up where the first left off with more close finishes, increased parity and stops at some of the most storied stock car events in the Southeast. The season also saw two events broadcast on national television and a third streamed over the internet.

All told, here are the top-5 moments from the 2014 Southern Super Series championship season.

Rattler 250 Added to Schedule Late in the Off-season

The initial 2014 Southern Super Series schedule came out on December 16 but did not include any new venues or events. That was rectified on January 13 when South Alabama Speedway and SSS officials entered into agreement to declare the prestigious Rattler 250 the new season-opening event.

At the time, it gave the second-year tour four extra-distance races and a claim as one of the most history-associated products in short track racing, until …

All-American 400, Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville Split from SLMs, SSS

Increasingly disenchanted with the Southern Super Series and Super Late Model racing as a whole, Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville suddenly opted to take the historic All-American 400 and revamp it into a 300-lap Pro Late Model event not associated with any tour whatsoever. The decision shook the short track world but the final analysis of the decision will not be known until the race takes place on Nov. 1.

Sunoco 125 introduces Southern Super Series to National Audience

The first nationally televised race in Southern Super Series history, even if tape-delayed on MAVTV and other sports outlets, was quite the barnburner and a stirring introduction to the product for those not familiar with it.

Anderson Bowen and Daniel Hemric engaged in a late-race duel for the win that can only be described as de facto Southern Super Series racing. Instead of recapping the finish of the year, the entire event can be (and SHOULD BE) viewed on YouTube below.

Daniel Hemric wins Papa John’s 125 at Pensacola and Returns to Contention

Defending Southern Super Series champion Daniel Hemric was consistent but not spectacular in the first half of the season, much of it spent in the new white-bodied chassis that didn’t have the same speed as the older championship-winning blue car. Hemric swapped over to the trusty blue car on June 28 and posted finishes of fourth, second, first, fourth and fourth with the win coming on July 25 at Five Flags Speedway.

Hemric outlasted Mike Garvey and Pollard to post his first victory of the season and thrust him back into title contention. It was a moment that could loom even larger depending on the circumstances of this weekend.

Crane Cams 125 at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville

This event was noteworthy for a variety of reasons.

In hindsight, it may have been the last Super Late Model race at Nashville for the foreseeable future given the events described above regarding the All-American 400. It was also the first tour event to be broadcast over the internet to a national audience (via XSAN), opening the series and discipline to a wide variety of new eyeballs.

John Hunter Nemechek dominated the race, leading 107 laps but was controversially disqualified for an illegal aluminum-plated driveshaft. While Nemechek did not plan to run for the championship based on his NASCAR Truck Series schedule, the No. 8 team contending late into the season may have changed those plans.

The disqualification handed Donnie Wilson his first victory in over a decade and propelled him into the championship picture despite missing the opening race at South Alabama Speedway. All told, the event dramatically changed the complexion of the entire season.
