So after a nice weekend getaway where I took my wife camping at my Pops’ beach property, we have a refocused plan. We return to Evergreen Speedway this coming weekend for a race on the 3/8ths that my brother Tommy will be running. I will man the spotter duties for him since my car is still in pieces. But we’re getting closer!
Having acquired a used crate engine out of the classifieds, we’re one step closer to my car returning to the Speedway and some racing action. The target date for that return is the K&N weekend on August 16th. While the Summer Showdown is by far our biggest event of the season, the K&N weekend is right behind that. That is when the NASCAR K&N series comes to town, along with the coverage they bring. So that is another time when you want to shine. Plus, we’ll be back on the big 5/8th mile track, which I much prefer!
This gives us two free weeks between races to not only get my brother’s “big track car” ready to go, but get my car back together. I think we have everything we need at the shop, so it will ultimately come down to a matter of time. With a small, family team, time at the shop is a bit different. Although we race against guys who have full-time employees who do nothing but work on their racecars all week long, we don’t have that luxury. On our team, everyone has a regular day job they go to each day. Everyone has family responsibilities that take time each day. So shop time is limited, and coveted. But with two free weeks between races, I feel like we’re in pretty good shape to make this thing happen.
I’m excited to have a target date picked out, and I really feel like we can do it. I’m also excited that it’s back on the big track, where I’m much more comfortable. The car ran pretty good there last time out, until we had a mechanical issue take us out of the race. We have a plan to make sure that doesn’t happen again, so this time things should be that much better. Now all we have to do is get there!
