NEWTON, NC :: It was a beautiful evening at Hickory Motor Speedway for AT&T Night Presented by Mobil 1. The action began with the K & P Construction 4-Cylinders with the #21 of Todd Harrington setting fast time. Harrington would take the early lead followed by the #51 of Nathaniel Kanupp, the #3 of Donnie Harmon, the #9 of Randy Canipe and the #98 of Chase Pollard following in tow. Canipe would have mechanical problems on lap 18 and move to the pits. At the checkered it was Harrington followed by Kanupp, Harmon, Pollard and the #98 of Rob Lewis.
The #25 of Brayton Haws would collect his first pole at Hickory Motor Speedway for the Paramount KIA Limited Late Models, but the #75 of Landon Huffman would take the early lead, followed by Haws and a battle for 3rd between the #00 of Shane Lee and the #18 of Casey Pierce. Lap7 would bring out the 1st caution with a spin by the #25 of Allen Huffman in turn 4. On the restart it was 2 by 2 – 5 rows deep for positions. Haws would take the lead from Huffman, followed by Lee, Pierce and the #15 of Sheflon Clay. Caution would come out again on lap 23 for the car of #21 of JP Dyar stalling in turn 2. At the line, it would be Haws with the win, Huffman 2nd, Lee 3rd, Clay 4th and the #54 of Kaleb Pressley rounding out the top 5.
Kevin Townsend would lead the Street Stocks to the green flag but the #16 of Jonathon Smith would take the early lead followed by Townsend, the #64 of Marshall Sutton, the #03 of Kevin Eby and the #33 of Mark Whitten rounding out the top 5. Lap 12 would bring a battle for 2nd between Sutton and Townsend but caution would interrupt the battle with a spin by the #10 of Ethan Johnson in Turn 4. Racing would resume with a battle for the lead between Smith and Sutton. Whitten would spin while running 5th and bring out the 2nd caution. Smith would continue to lead until lap 23 when Sutton would take the lead and move Smith to second, Eby would move to 3rd, Townsend 4th and the #2 of Larry Mosher 5th. With 2 laps to go Smith and Sutton would battle door to door, but at the line it was Smith taking the win, followed by Sutton, Eby, Townsend and Mosher.
The #33 of Jeremy Birch would set fast time for the Gold King Super Trucks. Birch and the #16 of Clint Fields would trade paint early for the lead. It would take 10 laps before Birch would take the point followed by Fields, the #03 of Chase Campbell, the #88 of Doug Barnes and a battle for 5th between the #0 of Jody Church and the #9 of Lee Queen. Queen would eventually take the 5th spot. Campbell would develop an electrical problem, but continued to press on and at the line it was Birch taking the win, followed by Fields, Campbell, Barnes and Queen.
It was a night of firsts for the #00 Shane Lee. Lee would take his first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Model pole for the Hickory Motor Speedway feature division. Lee would take the early lead and never looked back for his first win the the 50 lap feature event. The 50 lap race was slowed only once by a spin of the #92 of Tony Pasquarello on the front stretch. Lee was followed closely by the #12 of 2012 Track Champion Austin McDaniel, the #18 of David Roberts, the #43 of Jesse LeFevers and the #5 of Christian Calvo.
Charlie Neill would set fast time in the WrenchRags Renegades for the final event of the night. Neill would take the early lead followed by the #4 of Greg Austin, the #8 of Kenneth Roberts, the #16 of Carroll McKinney and the #6 of Darren Dickinson. The car of Roberts would pancake the wall hard on lap 4 but did not bring out a caution. At the line it would be Neill, followed by McKinney, Austin, Dickinson, and the #77 of Shawn Hayes.
Next race – April 20 – Catawba Valley 250 – CARS X-1R Pro Cup Series – 250 Laps – Racing Action @ 6pm for the Allison Legacy Cars, Autograph Session @ 7:15pm, Catawba Valley 250 @ 8pm – Adults $15 – Youth (6-12) $5 – Kids 5 & under Free.
April 27th will be round #4 of the ZLOOP Racing Challenge featuring 100-laps for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bojangles Late Models, 35-laps for the Paramount KIA Limited Late Models, 30-laps for the Street Stocks and 20-laps for the WrenchRags Renegades. Adults-$10, Teens/Seniors – $8, Kids 12 & under free. Gates open @5pm with racing starting @7pm.
