SPOTSYLVANIA, VA :: Following the guidance of the Spotsylvania County Planning Commission, the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a zoning change for the Dominion Raceway complex. The complex would be built in Thornburg, Virginia.
While the approval is not the final stage in the political process for the proposed speedway, the unanimous approval signals that the racetrack has support from the county supervisors and the remaining components will likely be passed paving the way for the speedway to be constructed later this year.
The racetrack will replace a void in the Washington, DC area as Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Virginia will not race this year, the first time in 66 years the facility has not raced. Old Dominion Speedway joins a long list of racetracks in the DC region that have closed due to noise concerns. Old Dominion Speedway is one of only two tracks in the DC region that hosted NASCAR races – the other was Beltsville Speedway in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
The planning commission now must approve the actual construction of the project and the track must obtain the proper permits and licenses from the county to operate the facility.
