NEWTON, NC :: David Garbo, Jr. scored his first career Late Model Stock Car victory on Saturday night picking up a win at Hickory Motor Speedway in the Big 10 Challenge. Garbo qualified in 13th with a 15.331 second lap but quickly made his way to the lead in the 100 lap race.
“It was a big win because it was my first career Late Model win,” said Garbo. “It means a lot. I got my first win of the year. Jamie Yelton and Fat Head Racing put a lot of work in to the car so I wouldn’t be here without them. It was a good race. It didn’t take too long to get out front. Once we got the lead, we rode a little bit, saved our tires and pulled away right at the end.”
Garbo took the lead on lap 28 and led the remaining 32 laps en route to his first career Late Model Stock Car victory.
“It’s a confidence booster,” said Garbo. “It’s hard to race every week. You never know how you’re going to do. I knew I had what it took to win some races. It was a matter of having the car right. We finally figured something out. It was hard for the guys to figure out what setup I needed to win the race. We finally figured out what we need for long runs. It’s a huge confidence booster now that we’ve got that figured out.”
Garbo is in his second season competing in Late Model Stock Cars. Last season, he competed in six races in the UARA-STARS tour. This season, he signed on with Jamie Yelton and Fat Head Racing Driver Development where he has been running in the UARA-STARS tour and in select NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model races.
Garbo’s best career finish in Late Model racing prior to his win on Saturday night was a second place finish at the season opening race of the season at Southern National Motorsports Park.
Garbo’s next race will be at Rockingham Speedway on Saturday, April 13th. Garbo sits sixth in UARA series points with one top five finish and two top ten finishes on the season. He is only 57 points out of the series points lead.
