In a seismic move on Wednesday afternoon, NASCAR announced that it was banning the display of the confederate flag from all NASCAR events, effective immediately.

Race22 has confirmed with NASCAR that this policy includes NASCAR Advanced Auto Parts Weekly Racing Series events and NASCAR Modified and ARCA Menards Series events.

“The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry,” NASCAR’s statement says.  “Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.”

The announcement comes on the heels of growing national awareness about racial injustice and systemic racism in the wake of the murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbrey as well as the death of Beonna Taylor.
