PELETIER, NC – Racing is set to return to Bobby Watson’s Carteret County Speedway on Sunday, May 24th after the offseason was extended because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Solid Rock Carriers Memorial Classic, which will kick off the 2020 season, will feature six divisions of racing, headlined by the Late Model division and the Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club. The Chargers, U-CARs, Street Stocks, and Champ Karts will also be in the fifth running of the late-Spring tradition.
“We are excited for racing to return to Carteret County Speedway,” track owner Bob Lowery said. “We are going to get back to racing in a safe manner. We have been cleared to open by officials and will follow recommendations of our local and state leaders and practice social distancing.”
Being outdoors and exposed to direct sunlight, Carteret County Speedway is a low-risk environment for the spread and transmission of COVID-19. While the risk is low, competitors and fans will be required to adhere to NCDHHS social distancing guidelines.
Carteret County Speedway will add sanitation stations around the track, both in the pits and in the stands, and will encourage people to remain spread out in the stands. Cloth facemasks are strongly recommended for those attending the event. Race teams are encouraged to limit the number of crew members in their pits during the weekend.
Throughout the years, the Memorial Classic has become one of the staples on the Carteret County Speedway with the Team Chevrolet of Swansboro Tribute to America pre-race show, honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States as well as our healthcare professionals who have been on the frontlines, and the entertaining races that often boast one of the highest car counts of the year.
Last year’s Memorial Classic saw T.J. Barron and eventual track champion Chris Burns pick up victories in a Late Model doubleheader.
Tickets for the Memorial Classic will be available at the gate for $15 for adults and $10 for active duty and retired military (with ID). Kids 10 and under are admitted free.
