MARTINSVILLE, VA :: Expect a few minor tweaks and tons of excitement when the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 NASCAR Late Model Stock race rolls into Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, October 6.

For the second straight year the field for the prestigious NASCAR Late Model race will be determined by heat races and a last-chance race instead of time trials.

The field will be set from four 20-lap qualifying races on Sunday, October 6, followed by a 20-lap last chance race. Eight drivers will advance from each qualifying race and 10 will come from the last-chance race to fill out the 42-car field for the 200-lap feature.

In 2012 the heat races were 25 laps, the last chance race 50 laps and the feature 150 laps.

“Last year we made some changes to the race format to add excitement for the fans as well as giving our competitors a good opportunity at making the race,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell.

“While we feel those changes accomplished what we wanted, we determined there were still some tweaks we could make to heighten the intensity level from a competitor’s standpoint and provide a fast-paced afternoon of racing for the fans. Also, it gets the feature race back to 200 laps where we feel it needs to be.”

Starting positions in the 20-lap heat races will be determined by practice speeds on Saturday.

The schedule for the weekend will remain the same as last year with the infield opening for teams to load-in at noon on Friday, October 4. Inspection is scheduled for Saturday morning with practice beginning at 1 p.m.

The first of the four qualifying races will begin at 12 noon on Sunday, October 6.
