The entry list for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season-opening Icebreaker 150 has hit numbers not seen in half a decade.

The event, to be held on Sunday at Thompson Raceway, is currently set to feature 36 drivers — the largest field for the Icebreaker since 2010 when 37 drivers took the green flag at the 5/8-mile oval. Doug Coby and Ryan Preece, the two most recent tour champions, headline a field that contains eight former champions and eight rookies.

Defending wins leader Justin Bonsignore will also joins tour mainstays Teddy Christopher, Todd Szegedy and Jamie Tomaino. Combined with the rookies, it’s arguably the most diverse entry lists in the recent history of the NASCAR open-wheeled division.

“I’m excited for the season and the Icebreaker,” Bonsignore said. “Our team has a ton of confidence going into the season after last year’s success. Having the same team and car from last year should help, especially given all the changes with the rest of the field.”

Making his full-time Modified Tour debut on Sunday will be defending Southern Modified Tour Rookie of the Year Spencer Davis. He says there is no other race where he would like to begin is northern career.

“I’m excited to start the north tour off with my 79 crew at Thompson for the icebreaker,” Davis said. “I’m definitely excited to race it because of all the stiff competition up north and just racing at Thompson in general. “And the icebreaker is just a cool race to be a part of because of the history behind it and the people that have won it.”

Previous winners include Christopher, Richie Evans, Jimmy Spencer, Tony Hirschman, Mike Stefanik and Bobby Santos.

Defending series rookie of the year Timmy Solomito believes fans are in store for their best Icebreaker in several seasons.

“There is a lot of talent in the field for Sunday,” Solomito said. “I’m really excited to get going with the new team and seeing how we do with each other. Eric Sanderson and the entire Flamingo team prepare great race cars and hopefully we can show all the hardwork the guys have put into the cars over the winter.

“I’m sure it will come down to the wire Sunday and hopefully the No. 16 Diversified Metals and Sanderson MaCleod Modified can be in the mix at the end.”
