The Spring Fling Twin 40-lap Late Model Stock Car event at Myrtle Beach Speedway got pushed back a day due to weather and when the green flag officially dropped on the tracks NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car racing season it was two local drivers taking wins.

Tommy Lemons, Jr. and his Jumpstart Motorsports teammate Craig Stallard were the lone travelers who made their way to Myrtle Beach for the opening event. And with the race getting pushed back to Sunday the field was a little shorter than expected with only 11 cars total making the trip with 10 cars making the start for each race.

Lemons qualified on the pole with a lap of 20.392 which was over a tenth of second faster than the second best lap turned in by Matt Cox at 20.496. Stallard turned in the third fastest time at 20.600 with Justin Milliken turning in a lap of 20.616 and Lucas Williams rounded out the top five at 20.663.

Brian Vause, Bryant Barnhill, Adam Congrove, Jeremy McDowell, Sammie Scarpelli and Jackie Ward completed the 11 cars to take time in qualifying.

When it was time for the green flag to wave Lemons good luck on the 2016 ran out in big way. He was sidelined before he could even take the green flag with a broken ball joint. His car would never see the track for race one.

That left Cox in a position to capitalize and the race was likely to be decided between him, Stallard and Milliken. Milliken looked strong but in the end it was Cox taking home the win over Stallard and Milliken. Vause and Barnhill completed the top five in race number one.

In race two the top six finishers were inverted and for the second time of the day the pole sitter wouldn’t make it to the green flag as Scarpelli crashed out on the front stretch before the green flag could wave. Lemons would return for this race but was forced to start a lap down due to not having put the required amount of laps on his tires in race one.

Lucas Williams had put exactly the right number of laps on his tires in race one (26) and was able to charge to the front of the field while a caution free event kept Lemons at bay. Lemons was a half second or more faster every lap than the leaders but was only able to return to finish in fifth position.

Williams would pick up the win with Cox finishing second and scoring the most points on the day. Congrove would finish third with Vause fourth ahead of Lemons. Stallard slipped to sixth with Barnhill slipping back to finish seventh after running among the top five most of the race.
