Chad McCumbee had not seen Carteret County Speedway prior to arriving to the track on Thursday afternoon, but that did not stop him from putting down a blistering lap of 16.192, which earned him the pole for tonight’s Solid Rock Carriers Crystal Coast 125.
Afternoon showers limited the amount of track times that Late Model teams could utilize before qualifying, but McCumbee was able to crack the top five in the only abbreviated session with a 16.362.
McCumbee picked up two tenths during his qualifying run to take the pole position away from drivers such as defending race winner Bobby McCarty and Layne Riggs, who was on his way to a victory in the 2018 edition of the race before being involved in an accident during the closing laps.
2017 CARS LMSC Tour champion Josh Berry made a run at McCumbee for the pole, but could only post a time of 16.229, which put him on the outside of the front row, while current points leader McCarty will be forced to dig himself out of a hole after qualifying in 11th.
Riggs will line up third on the grid, while Carteret County Speedway track regular Brandon Clements and Justin T. Carroll rounded out the Top 5 starters.
