GREENVILLE, SC :: Defending NASCAR Whelen All American Series South Carolina State Champion Anthony Anders started his 2013 season with a top-five finish on Saturday afternoon at Tennessee’s Kingsport Speedway.  Anders started 12th and got as high as fourth in the race.

“Our car was off just a little bit,” said Anders.  “The new Hoosier tires made a bigger difference than we thought it would and nobody really knew what to do with them.  All in all, I’m glad to come away with a fifth place finish.”

Anders qualified in 12th with a 15.488 second lap time and worked his way up to fourth position by lap 25 after a couple messy restarts and rode around there most of the race.  Anders stayed in the fourth position for much of the race before losing a spot in the closing laps.

“It looked like somebody up front was brake checking the field on the restarts or something,” said Anders.  “We just kept watching those guys in front of us and kept our nose clean.  Before I knew it, we were in the top-five.  It was just messy at the start of the race.  We were able to maintain a top-five position through the whole race which is a plus.  We came home with a top-five finish and the car in one piece so it was a good day.”

Anders’ next race will be on March 16th at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.

“I’m excited about getting back to a track I’m familiar with,” said Anders.  “We’ve got a ton of laps there.  We have some work to do on the cars back at the shop but I’m confident we’ll have the car extremely competitive in no time.”

The March 16th race will consist of twin 40 lap races.  It will be Anders’ third race of the season.  So far, in 2013, he has recorded two top-five finishes.
