ALTAMAHAW, NC :: As the points battle in the Moonshine Capital Promotions Series heats up with just a few races remaining, one of the contenders has sights set on wins and the 603 Crate Challenge.

Brian Sutphin competed in Limiteds at Motor Mile Speedway a year ago but this year, after adjusting his focus to running with Moonshine Capital Promotions, he finds himself in the thick of a championship battle.  Currently, the Floyd County, Virginia resident trails points leader Johnny Cash by just 12 points.  However he’s not worried about the points he says he’s just looking to get to victory lane.

“We have a shot at the points,” said Sutphin.  “We’re not points racing, we’re going to win and have fun.  If we finish good in the race, that’s a plus.  Johnny (Cash) is going to be tough.  He’ll have to have some bad luck.”

Sutphin is one of the few Moonshine Capital Promotions Series regulars that utilizes a GM 603 Crate Engine, typically run in Limiteds, but he’s been competing strong all season against built engine Late Models.  MCP recently offered up a $500 bonus to any driver competing with a 603 Crate if they can win.  Sutphin hopes to be the one to get the engine to its first MCP victory.

“We run with the built engines every week and we run good and competitive with them.  These engines are underpowered compared to the built engines but they’re competitive under the rules as well.  It’s a good thing (the 603 crate challenge) and I think we’ve got as good of a chance to win it as anyone.”

With the additional $500 on the line to a GM 603 Crate Engine, the MCP series is expecting many drivers with the engine to converge on Ace Speedway on Saturday August 16th.

“This challenge has the Limited guys fired up,” said MCP promoter Langley Austin.  “I’ve seen firsthand over the last two seasons that the engines are capable of winning.  Brian Sutphin has been in contention several times this season and looked to have one of the best cars at Ace on July 4th before getting swept up in an early accident.”

Austin says Sutphin might be one of the guys to win with the engine but there’s several drivers who are likely to be in contention with a GM 603 Crate Engine this weekend.

“There are plenty of drivers that I think have the potential to showcase what that engine can do this weekend.  South Boston regulars Tommy Peregoy and Daryn Cockram have each proven over the last two seasons that they can be fast and competitive with the engine.  Preston McGhee finished second in his only MCP series start in June and he could very well battle for the money.  Motor Mile regular Karl Budzevski and Orange County veteran Daryl Carver are expected to compete on Saturday too and either could win the money.”

Those looking to compete for the GM 603 Crate Challenge at Ace Speedway on Saturday will be met with two opportunities to win the cash in twin 40-lap features for the Late Models.  Twin Moonshine Modified races, a $400 to win Street Stock race and a $200 bounty in U-Cars highlight a big night of racing which will include single features for the Mini Stocks, Street ModZ and the East Coast Flatheads all for a $10 grandstand ticket.
