For some reason, most tracks in the Carolinas and Virginia only run on Saturday nights with a few tracks running on Friday nights.  This has been a gripe of mine for years.

However, Carteret County Speedway owner Bobby Watson has discovered that there are seven days in a week.  Tomorrow night, for the second time in as many years, the Swansboro, North Carolina track will host a Wednesday night race.  And this will be followed up by another Wednesday night race on July 19th.

Last season’s lone Wednesday night race, and one of only two races held last year on a weeknight , drew Carteret County Speedway’s largest car counts of the season in just about every division, sans Mini Stocks which saw a larger field in October for Chuck Ruffner’s Mini Stock Mayhem Series.  Dominion Raceway also hosted a weeknight race last season on a Thursday night, which they will again do on September 7th.

Weeknight racing is rare in the Southeast, but it is very common in the Northeast and the Midwest where fans can often attend three or four races a week.  Often times, this also allows drivers to race multiple times in a week, whereas they are constrained to one (maybe two) races a week in the Southeast.  And if it rains, that number declines to zero.

Fortunately, the region’s two newest tracks are giving fans and drivers additional opportunities to catch some classic short track racing action.

Hopefully this is the beginning of a trend.
