Piedmont Racing Expo Qualifying for the Myrtle Beach 400 featured many different drivers take turns on top of the charts, but Bahama, North Carolina native Layne Riggs managed to best everyone else with a pole-winning run of 20.230

Riggs was one of the fastest cars in the morning practice session, but he would have to wait a while along with several other notable drivers that included Peyton Sellers, Timothy Peters and defending Myrtle Beach 400 winner Josh Berry before they could turn a lap in qualifying. This allowed several Myrtle Beach regulars to post quick times early in the session, with Sam Yarborough occupying the provisional pole for several minutes.

As qualifying progressed, a mixture of veterans and rookies worked their way to the front of the field, with Ashton Higgins briefly holding the pole before he was knocked off by Wes Burton a few moments later. Tommy Lemons Jr. eventually surpassed Burton with a time of 20.351 before Riggs came out and obliterated his lap by over a tenth, which earned him the pole for the Myrtle Beach 400.

Corey Heim, who is making his fourth start in a Late Model with Lee Pulliam Performance, narrowly missed claiming the pole himself by a thousandth of a second, but he will lineup alongside Riggs in the second position. Justin Crider’s lap of 20.299 earned him the third starting position for tonight’s 250-lap feature, while Will Burns and Lemons rounded out the Top 5.

Berry was able to lock himself into the main event, but he will have to find a way to defend his Myrtle Beach 400 title from 14th. Notable drivers that will have to transfer their way into the feature from their respective heat races include Sam Yarborough as well as David Roberts, who led a good portion of the 2017 Myrtle Beach 400 until encountering issues late in the race.
