Thornburg, VA(November 26, 2012) – A proposal to build a racetrack in Thornburg, Virginia has entered the planning process in Spotsylvania County.  The current plan is to build an all-purpose motorsports complex, which includes a 1/8 mile drag strip, 4/10 mile oval and two mile road course.

“The plan is early in the review process,” Spotsylvania County Economic Development Director Tom Rumora said.  “The process has not officially started in terms of public hearings.  Some people have expressed their concern or support for the project.”

Steve Britt, the current owner of Old Dominion Speedway, hopes to open the Dominion Raceway complex in 2014.

“There’s a process where all the plans, possible benefits to the community and the timeline come out,” Rumora said.  “It sounds like something our community is very interested.”

That review process consists of going through staff review, then going the Spotsylvania County Planning Commission where the plan will be examined to see if it meets the letter of the law and the public interest and through the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors for final approval.  The Spotsylvania County Planning Commission and the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors are both likely to hold public hearings for citizen input.

With that review process now in motion, if the appointed planning commission and elected board of supervisors pass the plan, construction could begin in the spring or summer of 2013.
