Cole Timm was the surprise of the inaugural Championship Auto Racing Series (CARS) Super Late Model Tour race when he upset a stacked field at Southern National Motorsports Park.  Now, Timm is returning to the site of that stunning victory with confidence that he can win again.

Timm, 16, scored the biggest win of his career in the CARS Tour opener at Southern National on March 28th.  That race was his second career Super Late Model victory but it was also his biggest victory as a driver so far in his young career.

“It meant a lot to me beating some of the big names that were there,” Timm said.  “It was a boost of confidence.  We raced with PASS and they don’t get those big name guys.  I thought, am I good enough to beat them.  Winning that race, we knew we could, it’s possible.”

Timm is confident heading back to Southern National for Saturday night’s Don’t Tread On Me 250 presented by Military Missions in Action.

“It gives you a boost of confidence knowing that we’ve run so well there in the past and knowing we’re going back there and we’re bringing something similar,” Timm remarked.  “Even if we don’t win, we should have a decent run compared to what we have done there before.”

What’s even more impressive about Cole Timm’s impressive Super Late Model career is that he’s done it on a minimal budget when compared to many of his competitors in the CARS Tour and in Super Late Model racing in general.

“We go to the racetrack, we buy two sets of tires and that’s about it,” Timm explained.  “We don’t do a lot of testing.  The big red truck we take isn’t ours.  That’s Mike Smith’s truck, one of our sponsors.  I don’t know what to say.  It’s nice knowing that, for ourselves and other people who don’t have the full blown sponsorships, hey there are people with not as much money who can run with these guys.”

Timm attributes that success to the base setup he runs on his car.

“I think it’s a setup thing.  The setup we have, you can take it anywhere and run well.  We don’t think we need to test.  We’ve been running decent this year.  It just doesn’t make sense to us.  Why do we need to spend all this money on tires and rent a track when we don’t think it’s going to help us?”

Timm has already broken through and made a mark in Super Late Model racing with his victory at South Boston Speedway (Virginia) last year in the Pro All Stars Series (PASS), his Snowball Derby attempt and his win at Southern National this year.  It just seems like Timm could be on the brink of knocking down several wins and breaking into Super Late Model racing’s elite class of drivers.  He says he wishes he wishes he knew what it would take to get just that little bit more to bust out a series of wins.

“I honestly wish I knew.  If we can start it here next weekend, it would mean a lot.  I think we’ve got some racetracks coming up we’ve run well at in the past.  With the setup we have now, it’s been good everywhere, I think it could be coming up soon.”
